ATOS made a home visit in July 2012.
This, perhaps not surprisingly, did not go well. Fortunately we recorded the interview and so had proof of the proceedings.
At one point the doctor openly argued with my partner until I intervened and discussed his inappropriateness.
He asked a question on whether my partner was able to turn at nights. My partner stated that she had to lay in one position as if she were to lay on one side, incontinence and pain ensued.
Several times the doctor asked the same question, each time getting more aggressive and each time my partner tried to answer honestly – he even asked her to answer it ‘hypothetically’ !!! until she broke down in tears.
The doctor asked a question about getting up by herself. My partner answered ‘yes I can sometimes, when I am feeling better, but often I need help to wash and have food prepared I just stay.. . . ..’
…by this time the doctor had merely ticked the “yes” box and began to ask the next question. Again I stopped the assessment and discussed this inappropriateness.
The doctor was faced with a series of tick boxes. After a few questions, the doctor said “If I tick no to all of these, they will probably give you a full time carer to live in, is this what you want, well is it?” which again caused my partner to become upset. This was supposed to be a medical assessment which my partner was doing her best to be honest at and the doctor was intimating that she should change her answers to achieve a specific outcome!
We awaited the report…
